Advising a Small Business

As a consultant to small businesses I often wonder if the advice I give is received as intended. Otherwise, the "deaf ear syndrome" precludes my help. I try to stay within my realm of expertise, listen intensively and communicate clearly, to understand my client’s perception of the problem and the culture of the family and business in which any solution must be successful. I work hard to provoke thought and challenge owners to be objective and to foresee all of the benefits and risks to the business. Not because of my views on the solution but to elicit sufficient knowledge of the owner's view to find a "doable solution" as defined by the owner.
